Dublin to Liverpool
Date: Sunday July 2 2000
|
On Saturday July 1st Voyager 2000 set sail from Liverpool to Dublin
conveyed, once again, by the generosity and support of Merchant Ferries
to undertake their most ambitious event to date.
Once again Pool Beg Yacht Club in Dublin provided us with their usual
hospitality, this time in the form of overnight accommodation and a farewell
breakfast that would have sunk a battleship!
At 06:00 on Sunday 2nd July the flotilla slipped silently down the River
Liffey and headed for the open sea. Heavy mist enveloped us for approximately
30 mins while we made our way slowly towards the harbour exit. Consideration
was given as to whether to abort on safety grounds but on clearing the
harbour mouth visibility improved and the decision was made to carry on.
Conditions quickly improved and sea state became flat calm. |
At 09:30 Anglesey coastline came into view and the crew made contact with
The Buzz radio, a local broadcasting company who were monitoring our progress
and giving regular bulletins throughout the event.
At 13:00 we entered the River Mersey and made our way to the finishing
point, the Woodside Ferry Terminal, where upon we were met by our families
and well wishers. It was exactly seven hours after leaving Ireland and
hopefully a place in the Guinness Book of Records had been secured. The
journey was 124 miles, we used 140 litres of fuel and had to refuel 4 times.
As a result of the event £1500 was raised for the Arrowe Park
Scanner Appeal.
And as the team stepped ashore the planning had already begun for Voyager
2001!
