Voyager '99

Holyhead to Dublin
Date: Sunday September 26 1999

A jetski crossing of the Irish Sea between Holyhead & Dublin had never before been attempted. So on a grey and damp Sunday John Power got himself into the record books. At 9.00am John, his passenger John Young accompanied by two support boats slipped out of Holyhead harbour and into the next 57 nautical miles of the grey unknown.

The conditions were fairly calm to start with but sea conditions quickly changed and he rode into a force 4 mid way across. Twenty seven minutes after departure the bike was hit by a rouge wave and both John & his passenger found themselves unceremonialy dumped into the grey cold waters. After a quick check over by the paramedic they remounted and continued.

After a mid-way refuelling stop they approached the Irish coastline and they were met by the Irish Garda who escorted them into Pool Beg Sailing Club on the River Liffey at 12.31 pm

After a few hours rest and relaxation the crew once again, boarded their crafts and continued up river, under escort of the Irish Garda to O'Connell Bridge in the centre of Dublin. Special permission was granted for this special event by the Dublin Harbour Master as jet ski's are normally banned from the River Liffey and so at 3:00pm John and his team arrived at the finishing point under the O'Connell Bridge. The boat trailers which had been shipped free of charge by Stenna from Holyhead to Dublin earlier that morning were picked up by members of the Irish Garda and conveyed to Poole Beg Yacht Club where celebrations continued once the boats had been brought out of the water.

That same evening Merchant Ferries conveyed the entire crew and craft free of charge from their terminal in Dublin back to Liverpool for which we are most grateful.

As a result of all the sponsors involved the event raised £5000 for the Arrowe Park Sick Children's Holiday Fund.

And a month later, John came up with the idea for Voyager 2000.....
